For 80 years, almost nobody knew anything about the late days of a great German writer and thinker, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, who died in the small town of L'Aquila, in Central Italy.
Many people thought his body had been carried back in Germany, as had happened to Oscar Wilde, that now rests in Great Britain but whose mausoleum can still be admired in Paris' Père Lachaise cemetery.
For Ulrichs, the research had been very difficult, also because L'Aquila was hard to reach until a new highway was built, a few years ago, connecting it to Rome, the Capitol of Italy.
I went to L'Aquila, once, just to look for his last shelter, but I failed to prove even its existence. Then lately, thanks to Hubert C. Kennedy's work on the "Pioneer of Homosexual Emancipation" (The Body Politic, March/April 1978), I was informed that Ulrichs had been buried close to his benefactor's family chapel, the Marquis Niccolò Persichetti.
So, after a long search, and helped by the priest guardian of the cemetery, Father Nello Greco, I've found Karl Heinrich Ulrichs' grave and also the "Book of Dead" where, in the year 1895, July 15 (one day after his death), with the number 5095, he was officially declared "buried".
